Bewildered Crazy Bird

I've spent a fair bit of time admiring the Crazy Bird Phenom happen...hoping all the while to have a chance to try my hand at them!  You've got to hand it to Tim Holtz for finding particular niches and creating product that will allow all of us to fall into the pit of card making happiness.  Now, of course, there are several matching products that have followed after the Crazy Birds....and I intend to jump right into all of them!!
Just in case you are wondering...this is the very first larger set.  And though I enjoy fussy cutting my images out immensely!...I definitely took advantage of the matching die-cuts that went along with the stamps.
This is a regular A2 card - so I found a tag that was a more appropriate size then the ones on Tim's videos.  Then I proceeded to mess around with using my Alcohol Ink Applicator, the felt tip, several colors of Distress inks and some Distress Paint Dabber with the Harlequin stencil for the tag background.
Not to mention...the cool, cool, cool, stamp borders by Dylusions!  Now I'm religiously buying all of them!...sigh...will it every end?
     I hope not!!!  HA HA!

What did I enjoy the most?

Besides the obvious fun looking little guy up there...I would have to say the Dylusions borders!  Nothing looks right until you finish it off with just the right touches!  Now I have exploding brain about what to use them with next!

What did I learn?

I may have colored my images with colored pencil on some good white cardstock - BUT - white cardstock did not work as well for the direct to paper inking!  Isn't that weird?  It's true.  When I spritzed my tag and background cardstock with water...the white made a leached look that did not add to the serendipity of the finish card.  Then I used a good cream smooth Cougar cardstock that totally reacted differently.  Plus - somehow the finish of the cardstock is different.
Unexplainable weirdness that I will not forget in my following endeavors!

Watercolor District - Card One

I've been enjoying myself so much in my new store.  I just finished a class with 8 wonderful ladies - all different - all interesting and fun to listen to.  Sometimes I think it would be fun to rename everyone with one name like "Griselda"...so I could say things like:

Today Griselda said: "Gee - your outfit looks so nice...but it would be better if your fly was up!"

See what I mean?  I could relay everything (well...not everything...some things just shouldn't be said!)  that happens in the store without anyone knowing who said it!.  Might try that out!

HERE'S WHAT I USED TO MAKE THIS CARD:

If you can't tell from the picture...the front has been cut out so that you can see the inside as well as the outside!  There are 3 stamps in this set so that you can make a "tri-fold" card...which is cool.  But I wanted to do 3 cards for my ladies' class - therefore, I made 3 cards in a different way.

Stamps

"Shoppes TF - 4339" by Art Impressions (unmounted)
"Small Packages" Sentiments by Taylored Expressions

Tombow Markers

(numbers are correct - but the names aren't on the markers...so I just gave you a general idea)
  • #528 blue
  • #192 lt. green
  • #177 olive green
  • #N79 cement
  • #N55 dk gray
  • #879 dk brown
  • #027 muddy artichoke
  • #985 sunshiny yellow

Inks

  • Memento: Tuxedo Black

Tools

  • Waterbrush with Detail Tip

Instructions

  • Stamp your images in Black dye based ink
  • Scribble Marker on a plate
  • Use a waterbrush to pick up the color
  • Color your images
  • use more water or less water to get varying shades

Pictures to help you find your products...

Sit in the Chair and Post a Blog!

Okay...so it's been two years since my last blog.  How on earth did that happen?  I feel like it's only been a few months.  I've opened a new store (1 year old now), moved to a new house (about 6 months now) My two sons have their own lives  (with their own ideas - go figure!)...and the learning curve on a new Point of Sale and Website have taxed my poor brain to the limit!  The upside is that I love my new store, my returning customers, my new customers, and all the things I'm learning!! :)  The downside is - I've dropped a few balls while juggling.  Not a crime - but typing this out and writing down my thoughts, feels like an old friend revisited and long neglected.

One of the absolute greatest things about owning a store is bringing in the kinds of products that make life worth living!  Colored Pencils by Prismacolor give me a thrill every time.  It's almost hard to use anything else as they always make my coloring look good by accident, and the spreading around of pigment with a paper stump and odorless paint thinner is soothing.

So here I am thinking I have everything I need to complete this blog...only to find that I am missing the ingredients list....jeepers.  (left that at the store!)

Not erasing this...not going to wait until it's perfect to post (a  little/big problem of mine!)  So here's goes - posting anyway - and things will turn out over time!

Cheers!

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

I've been thinking a lot recently about how much easier it is to have a store! Since I have had the pleasure of owning 2 (one in Alaska and one here in Port Huron) I definitely can remember what it felt like to jump out of bed in the morning and realize I had "x" amount of time to galvanize the kids, myself, lunches, showers, assignments, rides to school, etc. to accomplish before I could unlock "forget-me-not Paper Arts" back door.  Now...especially since it is summer...I strolled down here with a cup of coffee before 8am.  (not that galvanized!)  My one son doesn't live in the house and my other one is snoring gently (pretty sure) upstairs.

You'd think working from home would be easier!  But a store leaves you no choices but to get your job done!  Go to work, panic, sweat, freak, race home, panic, sweat, freak, run back to the store for classes, panic, sweat, freak...you get the idea.

I believe I sauntered this morning....I'm even typing s..l..o..w.....

CityScapes CLA378 - Card 2

I've had so much fun with my new Die-namics Solid Skyline by
My Favorite Stamps or www.mftstamps.com!

After finishing the card I cut right into it along the grassline and up
the side of the tree so that I could put the city die in front of the sky but behind the grass.  Having a piece of the tree behind some tree branches helped to complete the illusion.

Botanical Butterflies - CLA376 - Card One

CLICK to get a recipe of this card to keep.  Sometimes an idea sparks creativity!

I don't know what it is about "Just Rite" stamps...but I seem to have a thing
for them. I just look at a new set of stamps and then my brain goes.."hey baby, lets color!"

I've been working hard on my new website hoping that one day - I'll actually think it's done.  I've changed the way it looks, the way the photos are taken, the way I name my product...I'm cursed!  I'm probably confusing it with card making...because nothing seems to look good enough!  I have a beautiful picture of the studio on the front page with snow falling!  So obviously!...I'll have to change it!  Craziness!  There must be a pill for this!

I'm looking around in my studio and loving it's new arrangement - but I'm flinching at the same time because it isn't finished and I promised myself I would move everything else around this weekend! (yuck-poo!) Up until this time my husband and I have been sharing this space and now we are moving his office to a spare bedroom and moving the servers to the basement as well. Which means I will be offline for a bit.  (hopefully only today).  So why is hubby at the local Best Buy this morning...hmmm???  I shouldn't bug him too much as I myself am not currently cleaning anything at this exact moment!!! :)

Vacations....hmm...Love 'em...but...
My pdf's stopped working because my domain name expired,
Blogger changed their format and I'm not used to it...
...and I keep refocusing my efforts because I haven't shaken off the
holiday feeling!!
So a bit of a rusty start today!

My son Michael went to a week long film camp at the New York Film Academy for his graduation present (ok...he's a trifle spoilt!...in a nice way!).  As the time drew near...Hubby and I got more and more antsy about whether or not we could let him go to the Big Apple all by himself!  (18 is still close to 17 you know??!!)  At almost the last minute we decided to tag along and hotel at a different location so as not to take away the "independence" feeling for him....but we did walk around with our cell phones in our hands!  By the third day...he didn't bother communicating anymore!  Darn it...he flew out of the nest!!!
I have to say I truly did not understand what "rat race" meant until we found ourselves vying for space on the sidewalks trying to get to our next location!  It's like some sweaty, hot, mob of people rubbing past each other on their way to somewhere with taxi's honking and whisking by so that you feel the air from the vehicle brushing against your legs!  So when I say vacation??.....I really meant "The Amazing Race" New York!

I literally have nothing to say!....Usually I've got something burning on my brain that has to get out and make an appearance! But maybe my brain has been fried? It would be great if you could bring your own colored pencils! Bring the ones that you have.

June should illegal....Now that the roller coaster has stopped...I'm getting off and back to Cardmaking.  I feel that the world should revolve around cards!  Ok ...maybe that's not realistic...but it's certainly easier to understand!

What is it about Just Rite Stamps?  They are wiggly and hard to stamp with!  They make great images...but I often get ink on the rims and if you don't attack with a wet wipe first...you get extra ink on your paper. Darn it...  But when you finish it off ?...somehow it all comes together.

Use this pdf to save this card idea or print it out. Those taking the class
might like to bring a copy for convenience sake.
PRINTABLE: DMgetMay_3

I have been reading and learning about taking photos and hope that I have been able to apply a little more (a very little more!) expertise to their creation.  In any case, it gives me hope that I now have a plan of execution that will bring some better results over time!  You know you're being selfish when you keep back cards from a store for the sole purpose of trying to take better pictures instead of giving them in a timely manner so that folks can see the cards and make a decision about whether or not they should take the class! Ridiculous!
....and yet??...I very naughtily did just that!!

I actually have nothing to say today (don't get too excited hubby!).  I'm sitting here saying to myself..."work, silly girl, work!".  So I'm slogging along checking things off the list.  Slow and steady wins the race right??...Hmmmm... I'm pretty sure I get more done when I'm running around with my head spinning...but we'll see...
I'm still messing with my camera and lighting.  So far...meh!  Maybe it's time for a photography class!

After laboring mightily and adding as much work as possible to a single card...I feel ready to make innocent and unsuspecting ladies sweat and grieve over the amount of work these cards will cause!  See me cackling quietly and sneakily to myself  hoping that I will trip these talented people up at last!  har har har !!!

If you haven't had a chance to try StampBord...and you delight in the details...I think you will enjoy trying your hand at this nifty product from Stampscapes.  I hadn't done it for a couple years and had to steady my shaking hand hoping I wouldn't screw up.  But I had forgotten how easy it is to use and to repair.  Can't wait to see what folks will come up with when they finish the cards and do their own thing!! It'll be awesome!

(Couldn't help adding some detail cutting as well...I can see you glowering now!)
